It’s no surprise that each generation has its own style elements that define that era, for example; the 60’s had a mini skirt, the 80’s had kitten heels and the 90’s had combat pants. Not every item is one that we’d like to remember, I mean I can’t believe that I had a pair of silver/grey boot leg jeans in the early 2000’s, but let’s just swiftly move on from that. What I’m trying to say is, every era has its own ‘Unifrom’ as such, and it’s got me thinking “what would the uniform of today be?” So, I’ve combined some of my favourite and most worn items to create my own ‘Moden Uniform’.
The items that I’ve picked really capture women of today (or in my opinion anyways) and how women are bold, independent and hardworking. I’ve obviously put my own spin on the look, it may be a little bit marmite to you, but it’s got thought behind it, trust me.
THE MODERN WARDROBE KEY PIECES
– THE SLOGAN TEE
Slogan Tee’s are everywhere right now and personally, I can’t get enough of them. It’s getting to the point where I don’t have enough space for any t-shirts in my wardrobe. The slogan tee is really taking the fashion world by storm right now, from high-street to high-end, it’s really not hard to get your hands on one. I’m all about slogans that make a statement, preferably regarding empowering women. It lets people know that I’m a woman, not a girl, I won’t be walked over and that I mean business. If a t-shirt can put the point across before I have to even open my mouth, then I’m all about it.
– A BOLD PRINT
The bolder the print, the better. If you follow my blog or my Instagram, then you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of animal print, I’m all about those Pat Butcher vibes! Adding a print into an outfit can really change the overall vibe. Whether you’re adding a floral print for some added femininity or edging an outfit up with some animal print, a print can really express a lot – Which is what style is all about. If you’re not into print as much as I can, you can start with a printed bag and build up your confidence with wearing prints.
Let’s be real, denim is BAE! Once again, denim can be worn in so many different ways and it’s all about your personal style, to how you want to wear denim. I’m a lover of all things denim. Denim jackets, skirts, jeans, shorts, you name it, I’ll wear it if it’s denim. Lately, I’ve been loving straight leg jeans, I just think the fit is so flattering and they just look so chic in general. Straight leg jeans are such a modern take on denim (even though they’ve been around forever!) I’m so over skinny jeans and straight leg jeans, in my opinion, are a more grown up shape.
– STANDOUT ACCESSORIES
Accessories have the ability to instantly lift and change an outfit, although accessories are just additions to an outfit, they really make a difference. Whenever I think my outfit is lacking, or I just really want to look #fashun, I whip out my sassiest accessories. It’s all about the details. Right now, statement earrings and bags seem to be everywhere. From basket bags to embroidered cross bodies, these details are the perfect way to make an outfit more standout. I mean, the bag I’m wearing is a giant fluff ball and I LOVE it!
WHAT A MODERN WOMAN MEANS TO ME
Women are fucking powerful, pardon my French but it’s true. Since I was a child, I’ve been surrounded by strong women, who’ve taught me so much and really enabled me to be as independent as I am today. I was brought up by my mum, single handily, we didn’t need no man. My mum honestly inspires me every single day. After everything she’s been through and everything she’s taught me, she still gives back. My mum is currently a Foster carer, so once again she’s teaching more young children her amazing outlook on life. What a bloody woman she is.
Another woman who has always inspired me with her amount of courage and strength is my Auntie Michelle. Many moons ago, Michelle had cancer and has lived with the scars, consequences and other illnesses pretty much ever since. She is beautiful, she is strong and she punches every illness square in the face and shows it who’s boss.
I am so fortunate to have such amazing women in my life, the list could go on and on. A modern woman to me is my Mum and my Auntie. They’re strong willed, they’re intelligent and they’re fighters. They’ve worked hard and even when life has tried to knock them down, they’ve stood back up and got on with it.
